Beneath Apple Manor (Apple 2) 1978
First top-down free-roaming rpg, first procedural generation
Gameplay video
Review - Creative Computing Magazine, october 1980
Trivia:
1) The goal is to obtain a Golden Apple on the bottom floor of the dungeon. There are 10 rooms per level in the low-res version, and 5 in the high-res
version.
2) Inspired by such games as "dnd"(1974) and "Tunnels and trolls" (1975).
3) Procedural generation is a method of creating data algorithmically as opposed to manually, typically through a combination of
human-generated assets and algorithms coupled with computer-generated randomness and processing power. In computer graphics, it is commonly used to create textures and 3D models. In video games,
it is used to automatically create large amounts of content in a game. Depending on the implementation, advantages of procedural generation can include smaller file sizes, larger amounts of
content, and randomness for less predictable gameplay
4) Predecessor of famous top-down RPG's like Final Fantasy (1987) and Dragon Quest (1987).
5) Emulated in: AppleWin
